The 81st encounter between these two teams in the Bundesliga and it brough fireworks on Friday night. Frankfurt came into this game full of confidence, winning both their games and travelling to a team who have had a very interesting international break, where they sacked Erik Ten Hag after only two games and now have Kasper Hjulmand in charge.

The opener came for the home team in just the 10th minute. A central freekick was no problem for Grimaldo on the edge of the box. His left foot curled it over the wall and into the top right corner of Frankfurt’s goal.

Nathan Tella was running riot in the first half, causing problems from both flanks. After winning the freekick for the first goal, he also won a penalty just before half time, which saw Patrick Schick place it calmly into the bottom left corner making it 2-0 and grabbing his third league goal of the season.

Frankfurt responded quickly in the second half. A poorly defender corner fell to the foot of Can Uzan and the 19 year old got his third league goal of the season after the left footed volley deflected off Loic Bade and beat Flecken.

With Frankfurt building momentum, captain Robert Andrich lost control of the ball and jumped dangerously into a tackle on Ritsu Doan, earning his second yellow card of the night and leaving his team down to 10 men.

Following in their captain footsteps, on his Bundesliga debut Ezequiel Fernandez lunged into a tackle needlessly and got his second yellow card of the night and Leverkusen’s second red card.

Despite being down to nine men, Hjulmund’s men secured an impressive victory. In the 98th minute, Grimaldo’s freekick magic was showcased again. This time from the right side, his curling freekick beat the wall, clipped the post and bulged the back of the net.

A dramatic night in Leverkusen marks the start of a new era in the BayArerna for Hjulmand.
