Dortmund travelled to Turin as they faced Juventus in their opening match of the Champions League campaign. The last time the travelling team beat the Italian Giants, they were crowed Champions of Europe in 1997.
Just three minutes in, Khephren Thuram nearly opened the scoring after a long-ranged effort was finding the top left corner but was saved by Gregor Kobel’s big right hand.
Despite a slow first half, the second was anything but as Dortmund broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute through Karim Adeyemi brilliance. Receiving the ball on the edge of Juventus’s box, after a touch out of his feet, he arrowed the ball with his left foot into the bottom right corner, beating Di Gregorio.
BVB weren’t a head for long as Kenan Yildiz had a moment of magic and levelled the content. Receiving the ball on the edge of the box, the 20-year-old cut inside from the left and curled the ball over the six foot five Kobel into the top right corner.
Just moments later from kick off, Dortmund hunted for redemption. An outrageous long shot from Felix Nmecha rifled past Di Gregorio and silenced the Turin crowd once again.
Craziness doesn’t stop there. As the game restarted, Dortmund cheaply lost possession in the middle of the park. Moving quickly Yildiz drove forward and slipped the substitute Dusan Vlahovic through on goal who smashed it into the bottom left corner.
After three goals in just four minutes, the game was tied at 2-2 with over 20 minutes still left to be played under the lights.
The 74th minute brought more action as Yan Couto fired Dortmund back Infront. The right back’s low drilled shot was too powerful for the Italian goalkeeper as the ball went under him and bulged the net. This is his first goal for the German giants.
Juventus found their defence exposed after a counterattack from the yellow shirts. Serhou Guirassy hoped to give Dortmund the finishing touch but was prevented by diving block from Lloyd Kelly. However, misery came for Kelly as a penalty was given for handball. After a lengthy VAR check, the left footed Ramy Bensebaini calmy slotted the ball home from the spot, expanding their lead by two in 85th minute.
Deep into stoppage time, Juventus were running out of time. That was until a low whipped ball by defender Pierre Kalulu found Vlahovic in the box who’s volley clipped of the post and flew into the back of the net. There was a little bit of hope for the men in all black but only two minutes remained.
As the home fans roared on, Edon Zhegrova drove forward with the ball into Dortmund’s half with less than a minute on the clock. Vlahovic received the ball on the right wing with freedom all around him, his in-swinging cross found the Englishman Kelly who thumped the header past Kobe. The Allianz stadium exploded with noise as Juventus save a point.
In the end, the clash in Turin beat all expectations, making it an instant Champions League classic. Both sides showcased their attacking brilliance and defensive deficiency, it brought excellent moments and goal of the year contenders.
